Micro Engineering Solutions
Donna Bibber is a Plastics Engineer and President/CEO of Micro Engineering Solutions, a medical and pharmaceutical device design, manufacturing, and assembly integration company working on critical tolerance-based devices for small to Fortune 100 companies. Ms. Bibber holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Plastics Engineering from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. She has completed over 1,000 micro medical and pharmaceutical devices using micro machining, micro molding, and micro assembly. Ms. Bibber has written and lectured hundreds of technical papers on micro and ultra-precision manufacturing associated topics worldwide and was voted onto the List of 100 Notable People in Medical.
Tim Biermann is the Director of Research and Development at the Joining Technologies Research Center (JRTC), a collaboration of Joining Technologies and Fraunhofer ILT. Before joining JRTC, he was a scientific engineer at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. Degree form RWTH Aachen University in Automotive Engineering/Mechanical Engineering.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Kerri Blobaum is a materials scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She received a Ph.D. from John Hopkins University, a M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.A. from Wartburg College. At LLNL, Kerri is an engineer with the high-energy density target fabrication group, which utilizes a variety of manufacturing techniques (diamond turning,microfabrication, micro-coining) to fabricate micro- to millimeter scale, high-precision components for experiments at the National Ignition Facility. Kerri’s work combines traditional metrology tools with “materials metrology,” including scanning electron microscopy, nanoindentation, and electron backscatter diffraction.
Sandia National Laboratories
Andre Claudet, PhD, PE, is a Principal Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories where he works in the Engineering Design and Integration Center. His current interests include micro-/meso-scale manufacturing and metrology for high-consequence applications. Prior to SNL he worked in the Precision Systems group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he primarily contributed to robotic system development for complex three dimensional laser surface treatment processes. Before joining LLNL Claudet cofounded a software company to produce analysis applications for 3D.
Anne is currently the Director of Quality at Medtronic, however her job is focused mostly on Reliability and Safety Engineering , and less on Manufacturing. She does have significant related experience for almost 10 years. Also, she will be retiring from Medronic in February, and thus, by April 1 will be the "former Director of Quality" at Medtronic.
Kornel F. Ehmann is the James N. and Nancy J. Farley Professor in Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, all in Mechanical Engineering.
Ehmann's career spans over 30 years in mechanical engineering. In addition to his role at Northwestern University, he is an Adjunct Professor of the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, a Distinguished Honorary Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur, India, and a University Chair Professor at the Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan.
Ehmann's main research interests are in the interrelated areas of machine tool structural dynamics, metal cutting processes and dynamics, computer control of machine tools and robots, accuracy control in machining, and micro/meso-scale mechanical manufacturing. General Dynamics, General Electric, General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, IBM, Ingersoll Milling Machine Co., SpeedFam, American Tool Co., LLNL, NIST, and others have supported his work.
He has published over 200 articles and supervised over 40 M.S. and 40 Ph.D. students. Ehmann is currently the Technical Editor of ASME's transaction journal, Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering. He has served as the President of NAMRI/SME and as the Chair of the Manufacturing Engineering Division of ASME. He is a fellow of ASME and SME and a recipient of the SME Gold Medal.

Brain Gracek has over 13 years of experience in the medical device industry working in positions in R&D, Manufacturing Operations, and Quality Assurance Engineering. Currently Mr. Gracek is employed as a Quality Manager, in St. Paul, Minnesota, for a global, diversified healthcare company. Mr. Gracek earned a Bachelor’s of Elective Studies, majoring in Chemistry, from St. Cloud State University and a Masters of Engineering Management from St. Cloud State University.
Keith Guggenberger is currently Senior Vice President of Operations at Starkey Laboratories, a leading manufacturer of hearing aids and related products. He has held both technical and management positions during his 27 year career at Starkey, helping the organization grow from $60 million to $800 million in revenue. Today, he helps guide Starkey's Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Microelectronics and Information Technology initiatives. He is also involved in efforts to bring lean techniques into Product Development. Mr. Guggenberger has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Industrial Technology. He has published several papers and co-authored the book A Practical Guide to Information Systems Process Improvement available online at Amazon.
Ping Guo is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University. He is working in the Advanced Manufacturing Lab, supervised by Prof. Kornel Ehmann. His general research interests lie in micro/meso-scale manufacturing. His thesis topic is on on the development of a vibration-assisted machining method for the fabrication of micro-structured surfaces.
Brent Hahn is a Sr. Engineer of Accumold, a high-tech manufacturer of precision micro, small, and lead frame injection molded plastic components. Hahn has 11 years of Part and Product Development experience in the resin, injection molding, and micro-injection molding industries. Hahn received his BS in Plastics Engineering and his MBA from the Pittsburg State University.

Dr. Hetland has 30+ years’ experience in the aerospace, defense, medical, disc-drive and commercial industries with extensive expertise in the mechanical and precision engineering fields as an engineer, consultant, educator, and author. He has extensive technical society affiliation and is recognized worldwide as chairman and member of U.S. committees as well as U.S. representative on international standards development in the areas of dimensional tolerancing, physical metrology and uncertainty analysis with emphasis in the sub-micrometer regime.
Columbia Plastics Ltd
F. Brian Holmes, CMfgE, is vice president and general manager at Columbia Plastics Ltd. in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, where he is responsible for the overall company performance. During his career, Holmes has overseen the design and construction of a new plant to consolidate two plant operations, and he worked on the development of injection-molded wood waste for silvaculture containers which spun off into a separate company. The president of SME in 2007, Holmes has been an SME member since 1982 and was the founding chair of Greater Vancouver Chapter 318. In the CanAm section of (the former) Region 7, he held the positions of secretary, chair-elect and chair. From 1987 to 1991, he served as chapter liaison representative and member of the International Membership Council Coordinating Committee. In 1995 and 1996, Holmes served on the Ad Hoc Membership Committee. In 2002, he was chair of the Member Committee. He has been a member of the SME Board Work Group on Governance, the Audit, Budget and Finance Committees. He received the 1991 SME Award of the Merit, the SME Endurance Award, and the SME Joseph A. Siegel Service Award in 1999. Holmes served as SME President in 2007 and served on many nominating committees since 1988. Holmes holds an associate degree in engineering technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Pete Mangan has over 25 year experience creating operational excellence and maximizing enterprise value. Expertise with startups, turnarounds, plant consolidations, establishing world class NPD process/systems, implementing ERP and ISO medical quality systems and working in multi- location and multi- cultural environments. Last 13 years focus has been with long term implantable medical products and combination (drug/device) products in the CRM, Orthopedic, Neuro and women’s health market space. Pete has an MBA from Rochester Institute of Technology and is a 6 sigma black belt as well as a certifications from the American Production and Inventory control Society (APICS).
Stu Kaplan is President of Makuta Technics, Inc. Makuta manufactures micro molded components and assemblies for the medical and pharmaceutical industries. Makuta is a member of the Sansyu Group of micro molders, the largest and oldest producer of micro molded components and assemblies in the world.
Stu's family has been in manufacturing since 1909 and his knowledge and backgound in micro manufacturing technology comes from having lived and worked in Japan.
Stu is a board member and a past president of the Manufacturers Association of Plastic Processors (MAPP) and he is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Medical Plastics Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
Iowa State University
Gap-Yong Kim is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University. He holds a BS from Yonsei University and a MS and PhD from University of Michigan. He also has 3 years industrial experience at Samick Precision Inc. He has been involved in micro-manufacturing for more than 10 years, and currently investigating ultrasonic-assisted microforming. His other research interests include developing new processing methods for metal composites and fuel cells.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
After obtaining BS and MS degrees from POSTECH *Pohang University of Science and Technology) and UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) in 2000 and 2005, respectively, Prof. Kim joined NanoRobotics Laboratory at CMU (Carneige Mellon University) to pursue his PhD degree under Prof. Metin Sitti’s supervision. His PhD works were mainly related to fabrication and characterization of gecko foot-hairs inspired polymer fibrillar adhesives. After his PhD degree in 2009, he moved to Prof. John Rogers’ group, he was developing micro-patterned elastomer stamps for transfer printing and fabricating deformable unusual optical, electronic, or mechanical microdevices. Currently, he has been working on transfer printing based micro/nanomanufacturing as an assistant professor in mechanical science and engineering department at UIUC since Fall 2011.
Plastic Design Corporation
Mark Kinder began his career in mold making as a prototype mold maker at Kenner Products. After graduating from college, he worked as a tool engineer, project engineer and program manager. Mark started Plastic Design Corp to provide the OEMs an engineering resource for the development of injection molded products. Twenty two years later, Plastic Design Corporation has become a leader in micro molding for the medical industry.
Andrew Kinser is a Value Stream Manager and Site Continuous Improvement Leader at Medtronic’s Energy and Components Center (MECC) in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. In this dual role, Andy provides leadership to an operations group manufacturing components for Medtronic’s Therapy Delivery Products and guides MECC on their journey towards Operational Excellence. Prior to his current role, Andy worked with Medtronic’s global manufacturing organizations, developing an internal assessment process to gage the maturity of Medtronic’s Continuous Improvement efforts. Based on the Shingo Prize philosophy that Principles guide Systems that lead to the behaviors observed in the organization, Andy is part of a team that is driving the implementation of the Medtronic Operating System; a set of principles that can guide Medtronic’s Systems toward accelerating continuous improvement. Andy has held roles in Process Engineering, Manufacturing Leadership, Lean Sigma training and project coaching, Technology Development, Business Process Improvement, and Lean in Healthcare efforts. He has partnered with industry groups, such as the Lean Enterprise Institute, Healthcare Value Network, and the Shingo Prize Organization. Andy Has a Bachelor’s of Chemical Engineering Degree from the University of Minnesota and is a Master Black Belt at Medtronic.
Georgia Institute of Technology
Thomas R. Kurfess received his S.B., S.M. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from M.I.T. in 1986, 1987 and 1989, respectively. He also received an S.M. degree from M.I.T. in electrical engineering and computer science in 1988. Following graduation, he joined Carnegie Mellon University where he rose to the rank of Associate Professor. In 1994 he moved to the Georgia Institute of Technology where he rose to the rank of Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. In 2005 he was named Professor and BMW Chair of Manufacturing in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research. In 2012 he returned to Georgia Tech as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. During 2012-2013, he was on leave serving as the Assistant Director for Advanced Manufacturing at the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President of the United States of America. In this position he had responsibility for engaging the Federal sector and the greater scientific community to identify possible areas for policy actions related to manufacturing. He was responsible for coordinating Federal advanced manufacturing R&D, addressing issues related to technology commercialization, identifying gaps in current Federal R&D in advanced manufacturing, and developing strategies to address these gaps. Professor Kurfess \ has served as a special consultant of the United Nations to the Government of Malaysia in the area of applied mechatronics and manufacturing, and as a participating guest at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in their Precision Engineering Program. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences. His research focuses on the design and development of advanced systems targeting the automotive sector (OEM and supplier) including vehicle and production systems. He has significant experience in high precision manufacturing and metrology systems. He has received numerous awards including a National Science Foundation (NSF) Young Investigator Award, an NSF Presidential Faculty Fellowship Award, the ASME Pi Tau Sigma Award, SME Young Manufacturing Engineer of the Year Award, the ASME Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award, the ASME Gustus L. Larson Award, an ASME Swanson Federal Award, and the SME Education Award. He is a Fellow of the AAAS, the SME and the ASME.
Dr. Levine has a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis in Biophysicial Chemistry, ,and worked in industry both in R&D and manufacturing , at start-ups as well as large fortune 500 companies for 15yrs before starting ALine. She founded ALine 2003, developing ALine’s platform technology to address the need for high quality, rapid prototyping of microfluidic devices. The company has several patents pending, is an honored supplier for the MDEA, and was most recently recognized as a finalist for the Patrick Soon Shiong Innovation Award.
As the Continuous Improvement Leader of Greatbatch Medical’s Plymouth, MN facility, Angie Long provides operations leadership for the facility’s lean implementation and ongoing initiatives. As a mentor, trainer, and facilitator, Angie works with the other plant leaders to assess the manufacturing system, develops plans to identify and achieve the desired future state, and establishes best practices for the business. Prior to joining Greatbatch, Angie served as a Continuous Improvement Facilitator for HID Global, driving and supporting lean implementation at facilities around the globe. Throughout her career, she has incorporated lean principles and six sigma methodology to improve manufacturing and business processes.
Rajiv Malhotra completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University, where he worked on a new die-less metal forming process called Incremental Forming. He has made significant computational and experimental advances in Incremental Forming towards understanding and improving formability, enhancing geometric accuracy, creating automated toolpath design methodologies and developing a new Double Sided Incremental Forming machine. His work in this area has led to two patents, the formation of a new startup company and numerous conference and journal papers in the last four years. He is now a research associate at Northwestern with Prof. Jian Cao and Prof. Ted Belytschko and works on projects on plasma micro-machining and XFEM, in addition to continuing his work on incremental forming.
James is originally from Atwater CA. He obtained his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Roe-Hulman Institute of Technology and is currently working on his doctoral studies at Northwestern University. His researc focuses on the characterization of materials with applications in the biomedical, automotive, and aerospace industries.
University of Minnesota
James Marti is Associate Program Director and External Affairs Coordinator for the Nanofabrication Center. Prior to joining the NFC, Dr. Marti conducted research on atmospheric nanoparticles for academic and government labs, and served as R&D director for several small companies with a nanotechnology product focus. A physicist by training, his primary scientific interest has been the physics and chemistry of micron- and nanometer-scale particles, particle systems, and related materials.
Third Wave Systems, Inc.
Dr. Troy Marusich is the Chief Technical Officer of Third Wave Systems, specializing in applying computational techniques to manufacturing and R&D for improved product and process performance. He is known internationally for his work in the simulation of metalworking processes for improved design and process performance and part quality. As the primary architect behind Third Wave Systems’ AdvantEdge software, he is responsible for the development of many proprietary technologies that Third Wave now holds. Dr. Marusich has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering from Brown University in the department of Solids and Structures.
Michael Mater is the Chief Engineer for ShaPix at Coherix and has over 18 years’ experience in the innovative technology arena taking technologies from an idea through product development into commercialized products. He holds a BA in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. Coherix is focused commercializing it's holographic interferometry technology into metrology tools and machine vision products for industry.

Rhett Mayor is an Assistant Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and doctorate in engineering from the University of Natal. Prior to his arrival at George Tech, Mayor was the president and CEO of Powerix Technologies LLC, a developer of innovative portable power systems for the consumer electronics and military power markets and an Assistant Research Scientist with the S.M. Wu Manufacturing Research Center at the University of Michigan.
Mayor's primary research interests are the emerging areas of micromanufacturing and micropower generation. His work also focuses on the development of enabling technologies in these fields through the application of integrated mechatronics design principles. Mayor's research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (ATP program), DARPA DSO, the Department of Energy and various industrial partners, including General Motors and Chrysler.
Mayor has been an advisor for SME's MicroManufacturing Conference since the inaugural event in 2003.
Georgia Institute of Technology
Shreyes N. Melkote is Associate Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of MechanicalEngineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his B.Tech. (Hons.) inManufacturing Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur in1987, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University in 1989, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Mechanics from Michigan Technological University in1993. Prior to joining the ranks of the faculty at Georgia Tech in 1995, Dr. Melkote conducted post-doctoral research in Machining Process Modeling and Machine Tool Systems at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Melkote’s current research activities are in the areas of workholding design automation andtechnology, micro-mechanical machining, surface generation in precision machining, andmachining process modeling. He has published extensively in these areas and has givennumerous technical presentations at peer institutions, industry and conferences. His current research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards andTechnology’s Advanced Technology Program, Georgia Research Alliance, The TimkenCompany, Caterpillar Inc., Ford Motor Company, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., and Delphi Research Labs. Dr. Mooradian is a seasoned Medical Device Executive, Scientist, Inventor and entrepreneur with extensive experience in R&D, Product Development and Commercialization.
Dan is Chief Scientific Officer for Innova Medical Design, a twin cities-based start-up addressing the issue of patient comfort & compliance by developing innovative products that reduce or eliminate needle pain. Dan has held various positions in the Medical Device industry including Vice President for Research & Development for Synovis Life Technologies, Inc. a position he has held from 2008 culminating in the company’s acquisition by Baxter Healthcare in 2012. Prior to that, Dan was Director of the Research & Technology Center at Boston Scientific Corporation with responsibility for the operations of a large preclinical research facility evaluating the feasibility, safety and efficacy of innovative product concepts for the global BSC business.
He has been involved in the design, development and successful commercialization of a number of innovative medical devices. His approach to product development and commercialization are guided by knowledge that innovation takes many forms, requires the practical application of invention and cannot succeed without cross-functional alignment and team-work. The challenges are numerous but they can be identified and managed.
Mr. Jerry Mraz is the General Manager of SmalTec International and has over 26 years of manufacturing experience of which seven years have been dedicated to micro manufacturing. During the 26 years he has been responsible for parts manufacturing, machine assembly, design localization and process development. He has experience in a variety of industries, holding a diversity of positions. He has in excess of 18 years of international operations and sales experience, working with associates and customers in many world markets. With this background he has identified and focused on the Micro Manufacturing sector as the next growth area for US manufacturing. The focus toward micro EDM as a beginning platform has allowed many US companies to advance their designs and technologies. He has experience in start up companies, where he successfully developed teams, structured departments, and guided growth.
Bruker Corporation/Nano Surfaces Business
Dr Erik Novak is Director of Technology Development at Bruker Nano Surfaces Division (formerly Wyko Corporation and Veeco Metrology Group). He has been working in the field of Metrology for more than 19 years. Erik has received four R & D 100 awards, numerous patents, and has more than sixty publications and book chapters in the field of precision measurement of surfaces and other key characteristics of industrial components.
Justin Paur is a medical production specialist. Working with both startups and large medical companies, he has set up new medical production on three continents for class 1, 2 and 3 medical devices. He is also a fellow with the U of M Medical Industry leadership Institute (MILI) where he has evaluated potential medical startups as well as causes for startup failure in the industry. He is currently the Director of Production at NACS.
Tony Pelke has been with Phillips Plastics Corporation for the past 23 years as a Project Engineer , Operations Manager and Engineering Manager. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technology in December, 1989. In October of 1996 Tony selected as the first engineer at the newly formed Phillips Plastics Corporation Metal Injection Molding business unit. Tony is currently the Engineering Manager at the MIM Facility and supports all quoting, tooling, Manufacturing Engineering and Project Engineering related functions and is a technical resource for Phillips Plastics field sales representatives and customers. To date Tony has been involved with over 1,000 successful MIM programs including approximately 50 percent of which have been medical related.
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Frank E. Pfefferkorn is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Director of the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Pfefferkorn’s work is focused on developing a strong manufacturing engineering workforce (students with undergraduate and graduate degrees) and help move laser micro polishing, micro end milling, friction stir welding, and thermally-assisted manufacturing from arts to science-based technologies that innovate manufacturing.
Don Risko has worked in the field of electrochemical machining for over twenty years. During that time he has acquired a number of patents and introduced electrochemical micro machining to the market. He has managed a number of innovative manufacturing solutions employing the electrolytic metal machining technology.
ProMed Molding Inc
Tina Roach is the Lean Six Sigma Manager at ProMed Molded Products with responsibility for continuous improvement throughout the organization. As the strategic performance improvement expert, she brings over 16 years of experience in operational and transactional process enhancements. Tina’s career has primarily been in long term implantable medical products, with over 8 years in the combination (drug/device) product realm. She holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Management, is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and is currently pursuing her Master Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
Saint Gobain Performance Plastics
Ishan Saxena is a 3rd year Ph.D. student at Dept. of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University working under the supervision of Prof. Kornel Ehmann. His research is focused on developing Laser-based micromachining and microtexturing methods. Currently he is working on developing the technique of laser induced plasma micromachining to be more suited for texturing large areas in reduced time. Saxena obtained and undergraduate and MS degrees from Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. His MS thesis was based on laser micromachining of micro-filters and analyzing the pressure drop across them in a fluid flow.
Bruker / Nano Surface DivisionChristopher Scorzelli
Christopher Scorzelli, M.D. is the Medical Innovation Director at Kablooē Design, where he works to invent new medical devices. Dr. Scorzelli is a physician by training, a self-taught engineer, and an artist at heart. He has over twelve years of experience in everything from Molecular Biology to Home Hospice to art. His career experiences have included fellowships at the National Institutes of Health and The Medical Devices Center (U. of MN), as well as numerous research and clinical work experiences in start-up genomics, biotech, and MedTech companies. Dr. Scorzelli also owned and operated his own Design and Specialty Renovation business selling his own artwork and performing custom renovations for clients. Dr. Scorzelli Co-founded one MedTech Start-up, and freelances as a Human Factors Consultant, most recently working for AUM Cardiovascular (Winner of 2011 Minnesota Cup Grand Prize). Beyond his own inventing (>21 provisional patents) Dr. Scorzelli has made it his mission to promote innovation and entrepreneurship to all ages in MN and currently serving as a Co-Chair for LifeScience Alley R&D Shared Interest Group Education, Capital Campaign/Exhibit Committee for “The Works: Hands on, Minds on, Engineering museum” “DesignWise Medical: A Pediatric Medical device non-profit” “The Medical Devices Center” (U. of MN), “FIRST Robotics”, “The G.R.I.T”, and “MOJO Minnesota” that share this mission. Dr. Scorzelli also holds a BS degree in Chemistry in addition to his Doctorate of Medicine.

Seugling is a Precision Engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and supports target fabrication within Target Science and Engineering group for both the OMEGA laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at Rochester, NY and the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNL. His primary responsibility is leading the design, manufacture and characterization of complex High Energy Density Science experimental targets. Richard received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2003 after which he was awarded an NRC post-doc fellowship at NIST where he spent a year studying small force metrology. Richard’s research interests include micro-scale metrology, advanced manufacture of precision structures, x-ray metrology, precision forming, diamond turning and micro-machining.

Pratheev Sreetharan was born in San Diego, California and spent his childhood in Bethesda, Maryland. He attended Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, receiving an A.B. in Physics in 2006. Afterwards, as a research physicist at ThermoFisher Scientific, he earned several patents on hand-held analytical instrumentation concerning x-ray fluorescence and optical emission spectroscopy. He returned to Harvard in 2008, receiving A.M. (2011) and Ph.D. (2012) degrees in Applied Physics investigating insect-scale flapping-wing flight control and developing novel millimeter-scale manufacturing processes. He is now CTO at Vibrant Research LLC, a Cambridge-based start-up company pursuing commercial opportunities for his landmark manufacturing technology.

Jürgen Stampfl obtained his PhD in materials science at the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Leoben in 1996. Afterwards he worked as research associate at the Rapid Prototyping Lab at Stanford University, USA (1997-2000). Back in Austria he worked as staff scientist at the Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf and since 2001 as university assistant at the Institute of Materials Science and Technology, Vienna University of Technology. William A. Strauss is a Senior Economist and Economic Advisor in the Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, which he joined in 1982. His chief responsibilities include analyzing the current performance of both the Midwest economy and the manufacturing sector for use in monetary policy. He produces the monthly Chicago Fed Midwest Manufacturing Index and organizes the Bank's Economic Outlook Symposium and Automotive Outlook Symposium. In addition, he conducts several economic workshops and industrial roundtables throughout the year.
Mr. Strauss earned a B.A. in economics and geography from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and an M.A. in economics from Northwestern University. He has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Loyola University Chicago and Webster University in Chicago. He currently teaches at DePaul University Kellstadt Graduate School of Business, and at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. At the latter institution, he was named winner of the 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award in the Business and Professional Programs. He was recognized by the University at Buffalo as a Distinguished Alumni in 2012.
His research papers include analysis of the manufacturing sector, the automotive sector, the Midwest regional economy, the trade-weighted dollar, business cycles, and Federal Reserve payments operations.
Mr. Strauss has been interviewed on numerous television and radio shows and quoted in the major business magazines and newspapers. He has also provided testimony concerning manufacturing issues to the U.S. Senate.

Gerald W. Timm earned B.E.E., M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. (E.E.) degress from the U of MN. Today he serves as the President and CEO for LifeScience Alley and The BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota. LifeScience Alley is the largest state-based life sciences trade association in the United States and provides industry players with a powerful forum for communication and collaboration through education, networking, advocacy, and innovation services. The BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota is an industry led nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of bioscience-based businesses in the state of Minnesota. On November 1, 2010 a Strategic Affiliation between the two organizations was formed that leverages the unique capabilities and resources of each to the benefit of the state and region’s life science industry.
Dale is currently a member of several industrial advisory and governance boards for different universities and companies. In 1988 he was a recipient of the Medtronic Star of Excellence Award, and in 1997 received the Wallin Leadership Award. In 2002 Dale was recognized as the outstanding graduate of the year by the engineering department of St. Cloud State University. In 2007 he was honored by Twin Cites Business Magazine and was the recipient of the Bioscience Success Story Award. In 2010 and 2011, Twin Cities Business Magazine selected Dale as one of 200 "Minnesotans You Should Know." He currently has eleven patents in medical device technology with more pending.

Dr. Yoo is a surgeon and researcher. He is currently a Professor, Associate Director, and Chief Scientific Officer at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine and is cross-appointed to the Department of Urology, Physiology and Pharmacology, and Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Yoo's research efforts have been directed toward the clinical translation of tissue engineering technologies and cell-based therapies by developing new therapeutic modalities for the functional repair and replacement of diseased tissues and organs. Dr. Yoo's background in cell biology and medicine has facilitated the transfer of many cell-based technologies from the bench-top to the bedside. A few notable examples of successful clinical translation include the bladder and urethras. Other technologies that are being developed for clinical trials include cell therapy for renal failure, muscle cell therapy for incontinence, and skin bioprinting and skin expander for the treatment of burn patients. Dr. Yoo has served on many institutional, national, and international committees and advisory boards. He has successfully organized and directed many scientific meetings and symposia and managed many multi-institutional and international collaborative research projects and programs. He has actively contributed to the scientific community through publication, meeting presentations, and lectures worldwide.
